You Already Are A Writer. You Just Have To Identify As One To Yourself.
Art For Art's Sake: Part 18
I have always wanted to be an author. So over the course of my life, the decisions I have made and the things I Invested my time in, were focused on realising that dream.
- Oyinkan Braithwaite
This is a lesson I have learnt in recent years.
It's not about what you want to write and how to write it. It's about how to become and identify as a writer yourself.
For the first four years of my writing journey, I was so obsessed with learning how to write the best novel that I completely missed out on the fact that I had to become someone who writes.
The mindset that helped me complete schooling and childhood is not the mindset that will help me become a writer.
I have to change my thoughts, beliefs, and lifestyle to live the best writer life I could possibly live at this moment. I have to behave as future, successful and happy Rubina right now.
I have to go deep instead of shallow.
I might work fewer hours, but I know I will make every minute count.
I have become a silent observer instead of a loud and instant reactor.
I have to take care of my mental health because that's an essential key to the whole writing game.
I have to act like the writer I want to become. I need to imagine what Ideal Writer Rubina would do at this moment and try to replicate it. Slowly, in doing so, I will turn into her.
Every time I write and publish an essay, every time I add another 300 words to my manuscript, I am casting a vote for myself as a writer. This is building up my inner artist's trust in myself to make her dream of becoming a writer real.
Life is a long game, and so is the journey to becoming a writer.
Becoming and being seen as a writer is not about the books you publish, though they prove your profession. Becoming a writer is more about you having faith in the future image of yourself and trying to recreate it now.
