It's been more than a month now that Marvel's new Disney+ series, Moon Knight, is over. But the problem is I can't stop thinking about it.
So I thought, why not share my thoughts with you.
Here are 5 reasons why you should watch Moon Knight -
Marvel Is Breaking The Superhero Mold
Marvel did this with WandaVision, Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and, now, Moon Knight.
Yes, these are stories about humans with unusual abilities.
Yes, they kick and punch a lot.
Yes, there are cables and green screens.
But Marvel also tells a story, and they do it in two ways.
One - They tell you how hard it is for these humans to be superheroes, what it takes to be one and how they became one. Marvel tells the story of the human being behind the masks.
Two - Genre mixing
Moon Knight =
Marvel Superhero + Egyptian Horror + Indiana Jones Adventure + Fight Club Psychological Thriller + a sprinkle of Humor
Never in a thousand years could we lay people imagine such a combination, but Marvel writers (headed by Jeremy Slater) pulled it off amazingly.
Moon Knight is the trippiest superhero show you'll ever watch.
Storytelling
Hats off to Egyptian director Mohamed Diab and director duo Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead for making this trippy adventure.
I loved how every episode kept me (& my mother, FYI) on the edge of my seat.
I loved how every episode made me scream at the tv screen, "What the hell just happened!?"
I loved how each episode melted my brain.
I loved how each episode warmed my heart and made me feel for the characters.
I loved how they built up the inciting moments and finished them with a flourish.
I loved how the writers and directors weaved the Ancient Egypt history into the plot and ensured that it remained prominent in every episode.
I have no complaints here.
Music
I wish Marvel had spoken about the music of the Moon Knight series in the Moon Knight Assembled episode because it is absolutely worth the mention.
Composed by Egyptian composer Hesham Nazih, the music gave me goosebumps! I didn't know mixing modern instruments with Egyptian music would sound so good.
I believe Moon Knight is the third MCU production (after Black Panther and Loki) that I'll remember for its music.
Also, I thank Marvel for introducing me to Engelbert Humperdinck's A Man Without Love. I am obsessed with this melancholic ballad.
Ethan Hawke and May Calamawy
The hero of a story can only be good if they have a great villain. And Ethan Hawke played that role too well!
His take on Arthur Harrow made him, to me, one of the best villains in MCU. I couldn't help but be scared and/or cringe whenever he came on the screen.
May Calamawy was a surprise I wasn't expecting. I love the fact that the new phase of MCU is seeing Marvel ladies take the front seat. May was absolute dynamite, and I can't wait to see more of her!
Oscar Issac
Finally, this man is getting work of his calibre, with a massive audience to reach.
Oscar Issac is the BEST actor to play Moon Knight.
It must have taken him so much effort to pull off three personalities with their own pains and history, yet it looked effortless to us.
His portrayal of a man dealing with a mental disorder (dissociative identity disorder (DID)) and witnessing the childhood pain that caused it was heart-wrenching.
There are uncut scenes where Oscar shifts from one personality (a brutal Chicago mercenary) to another (a timid British gift shop employee), which will make you marvel at his acting skills.
On Oscar Issac's strong shoulders, Moon Knight will fly high.
Moon Knight is available on Disney+.
The episode on the making of Moon Knight is also available on Disney+. (Marvel Studios Assembled: Episode 9)
