It Took Me An Accident To Realise I Took My Body For Granted
A Mistake We All Are Making
Before I knew it, Ethan - my trusty scooter - lost his balance, and I fell down, banging my head on the road.
Now that was a fun way to celebrate Easter this year.
God bless the man who helped me and made sure I was ok. And thank God I was ok. I escaped with an abrasion on my right forearm, a sore thigh and a stiff neck.
As for the banging of the head, my helmet saved me. Wear them, folks. They do come in handy.
The stiff neck made me realise that I took my body for granted.
Now I know how much we use the neck muscles -
We use them to stare down at our phones.
We use them to keep our heads balanced on our shoulders.
We use them to carry the weight of the head. (Did you know our head weighs 5kgs!?)
We use them to do sit-ups.
We use them to turn around while sleeping. (Doing this hurt me the most.)
And if you have pain in the neck, know you'll have that pain travel up and down that side of your body. From the middle back to my eyebrow, my left side was in a dull ache.
It even hurt to sneeze!
Before the accident, I never thought about how helpful my neck was. We rarely get a chance to realise how valuable our bodies are to us in our day-to-day lives. It's only when our body is hurt in some way that we realise we never took care of it.
Now I wonder how my body is helping me in other ways that I don't know of. And maybe, my body is going through a lot to make sure I am ok. And then there I am, not appreciating it because it's not the "right size."
Woman, I think to myself, at least we have a body!
An accident is a significant trauma. But what about the day-to-day wounds we inflict on ourselves?
Over-working? Stressing? Eating the wrong stuff? Not giving our body the rest it deserves?
I am sure that we are hurting our bodies more than we realise.
Let's correct it before it's too late.
Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live. - Jim Rohn
