Day 8: How I Got Interested In Crime Fiction And Writing My Own
Follow along my Ship 30 for 30 journey as I learn what it means to be a writer in this digital age.
I wouldn't call myself an expert in writing crime fiction.
However, I have spent 15 years reading crime fiction and 6 years learning about the same. And I have spent the last 2 years practising it.
Here's how I first got interested in writing crime fiction:
I blame Agatha Christie. She got me hooked on crimes and detectives and all things mystery.
The first book I read was Agatha Christie's The Adventure of Christmas Pudding. I remember thinking how fun it would be if I could write such a book. This was in 2007, 7th grade.
Then May 2014 (2nd year of college), when I was in the depths of depression, Agatha Christie's Curtain came to my rescue. I remember feeling ecstatic when I finished the novel. That is when I heard a soft voice inside me speak:
What if I could give others the same feelings Agatha Christie gave me?
That made me sit up and pay attention. Then the voice spoke again, sounding a little louder and confident this time:
Yes, I will become a writer.
That’s how I started this lovely journey.
So my goal over the next 134 days is:
To write the first draft of my crime fiction novel, code-named OS.
I have tried three times before my current turn to write a novel and failed. This time I have removed all the unnecessary self-imposed pressure. My only aim in writing this draft is to enjoy the process.
Let’s see where it takes me.
