Day 3: The 1 Book That Changed The Trajectory Of My Life
Follow along my Ship 30 for 30 journey as I learn what it means to be a writer in this digital age.
This was in 2007. I was in 7th grade, and all my classmates were goggling over either Harry Potter or Twilight.
Not having a book in my hand made me feel left out. It also reminded me of my 5th-grade teacher's advice: read more books, and you'll improve your vocabulary.
Since I wasn't into magic schools and pale vampires, I chose the genre that usually held my attention. Detective fiction.
But I had never read a novel in my life, let alone detective fiction. So, the question was which one to choose.
My mother came to my rescue.
"You should try Agatha Christie," she said.
Later that evening, I bought my first novel, my first Agatha Christie - The Adventure of Christmas Pudding.
The 363-page petite collection of short stories starring Detective Hercule Poirot took me 6 months to read.
The day I finished the book, I was a changed person. I became a reader.
Agatha Christie's The Adventure of Christmas Pudding changed the trajectory of my life.
If it wasn't for this book, I wouldn't have been a reader, and I wouldn't have ever dreamt of becoming a writer.
15 years later, my love affair with Agatha Christie and Hercule Poirot grows stronger with each passing day. And I am glad our paths crossed.
