3 Lessons I Wish I Knew Before I Started My Youtube Channel
I Know This Because I Tried YouTube And Failed
The year was 2019.
Before I started writing online, I tried my hand at making videos online.
My understanding was that people prefer videos over text in the online world. So I thought, why not share my lessons in video format instead of text.
It didn't take long for me to realise that I am not cut for video making.
Before I could even make it to my channel's first anniversary, I stopped making videos.
But I learned 3 lessons I wish I had known before starting my YouTube channel.
I Am Not A Cut For Video Making
When it comes to video, I prefer the finished product to the process of reaching there.
Do you know how many caps I had to wear to make one video?
Writer. Production crew gal. Camera woman. Director. Producer. Make-Up and Hair. Costume Designer. Actor/Host. Editor. PR & Social Media Manager. Promoter.
Other than writing, I enjoyed none of those tasks. And I hated editing the most.
I can't wear all the caps at the same time. Nor do I need to.
It's Time Consuming
A simple 5-minute talking head video took me 4-5 days to create. And this was just the basic editing and graphics. Nothing fancy.
The learning curve in each aspect of video making is so steep that I overwhelmed myself real quick.
And so much of it is about staring at the screen. Oh! My eyes burned to watch that same clip repeatedly to make sure all was as I wanted it to be.
I Chose The Wrong Posting Schedule
YouTube prefers that you post at least one video per week. So I thought that's what I should do.
Wrong answer!
Because of the above two points, posting one video per week, even as small as 3 minutes, was an absolute nightmare for me.
Do I Still Want To Make YouTube Videos?
Heck yes!
I am constantly watching videos made by others and know how helpful they can be.
I may go back one day and make some, but it won't be without help.
I don't want to go through the same insanity again, alone. 😝
Ps. In case you want to see the mess I was in my videos, here is the link.
